Monoxide
The
law now requires that Carbon Monoxide Detectors be installed
in certain residential properties. The law is designed to protect
Massachusetts residents from the dangers of carbon monoxide -
an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that can be deadly.
Often called the "Silent Killer",
carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by fossil-fuel burning appliances
such as furnaces, ovens, clothes dryers, water heaters and space
heaters, as well as fireplaces, charcoal or gas grills and wood
burning stoves. CO poisoning is the leading cause of accidental
death in the United States.
Massachusetts' new law requires that CO alarms
be installed in all residences that contain fossil fuel burning
equipment or incorporate enclosed parking in its structure. Known
as Nicole's Law, the new ordinance was named after seven-year
old Nicole Garafolo, who died when a heavy snowfall blocked a
heating vent outside her family's home in Plymouth, forcing carbon
monoxide fumes back into the house.
Firefighters respond to thousands of homes
for carbon monoxide-related calls each year. CO levels can rise
quickly and become lethal if not detected. A CO alarm is the
only safe way to find out if carbon monoxide is present in your
home.

Don't wait until it's too late to protect your family from this
hidden danger.
